In short: the best time to visit Sardinia is from May to October. June and September are the most balanced months, with warm sea and fewer crowds than July and August.

Sardinia has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild winters on the coast, with a more marked temperature swing inland, where winter temperatures drop noticeably more than by the sea. This means the "best time" depends a lot on what you want to do, not just the month.

Sardinia's climate, month by month

April and May: spring, mild temperatures

Temperatures range between 16 and 23°C, the countryside is green and in bloom, and it's the ideal period for trekking, cultural visits and tastings without summer heat. The sea is still cool (17-19°C), not great for a long swim but perfect for a first boat trip.

June: the most balanced month

Temperatures between 22 and 28°C, the sea already pleasant (22-24°C) and tourist numbers still moderate compared to July-August. For many, this is the ideal month to combine sea, excursions and food & wine without the crowds.

July and August: high season

Intense heat (28-32°C, often higher inland), sea at 25-26°C, peak tourist numbers especially on the Costa Smeralda and the South coast. August in particular should be booked well in advance. Those seeking quiet can head inland or to the less touristy areas of the South-West.

September and October: the most recommended low season

Still-summery temperatures in the first half of September (24-28°C), very warm sea (24-25°C) thanks to summer heat build-up, and a sharp drop in crowds after mid-August. This is the period we recommend most often to those with flexible dates.

November-March: low season, not for the beach

Mild temperatures on the coast (10-16°C) but colder inland in the mountains, shorter days, sea not suitable for swimming. It's still a good period for culture, food & wine, easy trekking and the Barbagia carnival (January-February), as well as lower accommodation rates.
