The experience
An island on the migratory routes between Europe and Africa

Sardinia is one of the most interesting destinations in the Mediterranean for birdwatching. Its position, between Europe and Africa, places it along major migratory routes, while the extraordinary variety of habitats — wetlands, coastal lagoons, mountains, farmland, cliffs and Mediterranean scrub — makes it possible to observe a surprising number of species across very different territories.

We built this 8-day tour in partnership with Dr. Davide De Rosa, ornithologist and naturalist, to offer a specialist experience that also tells the story of Sardinia as a whole. The journey crosses the island from south to north, mostly along the western side, alternating observation sessions with experiences tied to archaeology, landscape, wine and traditional food.

The tour is designed for small groups, up to a maximum of 8 participants, to ensure quality of observation, flexibility in movement and direct contact with the ornithologist.

When to go
Late April – early May

The ideal period is between the last week of April and the first days of May, when spring migration and the breeding season make the wetlands and other habitats crossed by the tour especially interesting.

It's the time of year when resident species are joined by numerous migrants, and when it's possible to observe some of the most interesting behaviours of nesting species.

Arrival in Cagliari

Arrival at Cagliari airport, meeting with our staff and transfer to the hotel. The first evening is dedicated to an introduction to Sardinia through its cuisine, with a traditional seafood dinner. Overnight in Cagliari.

Molentargius and S'Ena Arrubia

The first full day of birdwatching begins in the Molentargius Park and its salt pans, one of the most important natural areas in southern Sardinia, with an extensive system of ponds and wetlands. Packed lunch, then on towards the north: in the afternoon we reach the S'Ena Arrubia wetland, along the Gulf of Oristano, for a second observation session. Transfer to the Cabras-Oristano area, dinner and overnight.

Target species: Purple Swamphen, Great White Pelican, Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo, Gull-billed Tern, Little Tern, Audouin's Gull.

The wetlands of the Sinis Peninsula

A full day dedicated to the Sinis Peninsula, one of Sardinia's most important birdwatching areas: lagoons, ponds, beaches, farmland and Mediterranean scrub form a particularly rich mosaic of habitats. During the day we also visit San Salvatore di Sinis, a small and fascinating village with an unusual history. Packed lunch on the coast. In the evening we return to the Cabras area, ending the day with a dinner devoted to lagoon cuisine and local seafood.

Target species: Purple Swamphen, Corsican Spotted Flycatcher, Calandra Lark, Short-toed Lark, Subalpine Warbler (Sardinian), Red-crested Pochard, Glossy Ibis, Common Tern, Little Tern, Gull-billed Tern, Osprey, Tawny Pipit.

Nuragic Sardinia and the Bosa coast

We leave the wetlands of the Oristano area to cross central Sardinia, starting with a visit to one of the most important monuments of the Nuragic civilisation. We then head to the western coast along the spectacular Bosa-Alghero scenic road, one of the island's most beautiful landscape routes: here the star is the Griffon Vulture, which finds one of its most important habitats in Sardinia on the great coastal cliffs. Packed lunch during the excursion and arrival in Alghero in the late afternoon, with free time in the historic centre.

Target species: Griffon Vulture, Stone-curlew, Marmora's Warbler, Dartford Warbler, Moltoni's Warbler, Red-backed Shrike (subspecies badius).

Porto Conte, Lake Baratz and Stintino

A particularly varied day dedicated to the natural environments of north-west Sardinia. In the morning, the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park, with a birdwatching session in the Le Prigionette area and later at Lake Baratz, Sardinia's only natural lake. For lunch, one of Alghero's best-known specialities: the traditional Milese focaccia. In the afternoon, room for wine culture too, with a tasting at a local winery, before heading on to the Stagno di Pilo and the Stintino salt pans for a further observation session. Dinner and overnight in Stintino.

Target species: Rock Dove, Pallid Swift, Alpine Swift, Blue Rock Thrush, Scopoli's Shearwater, Yelkouan Shearwater, Mediterranean Peregrine Falcon, European Shag.

Asinara National Park

A full day dedicated to one of Sardinia's most fascinating natural environments: Asinara National Park. We reach the island by sea and explore it by off-road vehicle, accompanied by an authorised Park guide. Asinara's isolation and the variety of its habitats mean the day is dedicated not only to birdlife but to the island's entire ecosystem. Packed lunch during the excursion. In the afternoon, return to the mainland and transfer towards inland Sardinia.

Target species: Sardinian Partridge, Audouin's Gull, Stone-curlew, Marmora's Warbler, Dartford Warbler, migrating raptors. There's also a chance to see mouflon, white donkeys, tortoises and other species characteristic of the island's wildlife.

Monte Limbara and the Ozieri plain

The last big day of birdwatching takes us to the mountain and farmland environments of northern Sardinia: Monte Limbara and, later, the Ozieri plain, changing scenery and habitat completely once again. A particularly interesting day in the search for the Little Bustard, one of the flagship species of this itinerary, along with the Corsican Finch. Lunch with traditional local products, including the typical panadas.

Target species: Little Bustard, Corsican Finch, Marmora's Warbler, Lesser Kestrel, Spotless Starling, Bedriaga's Rock Lizard.

Departure

Breakfast and transfer to the airport according to the return flight schedule. End of services.

The itinerary is built around birdwatching and adapted to conditions on the ground: species presence, migration, weather and observation opportunities may lead to changes in individual visits. For this reason the programme deliberately keeps a degree of flexibility.

Davide De Rosa is an ornithologist and naturalist with experience in the study and monitoring of birdlife and an in-depth knowledge of Sardinia's habitats.

His fieldwork and direct knowledge of the areas covered by the tour mean the days are built not as simple visits to nature sites, but as genuine research and observation sessions, adapting the itinerary when needed to environmental conditions and species presence.

Throughout the trip, Davide personally accompanies the small group, offering a specialist experience and direct contact with the land.
